Mastering the strategic information that circulates on the Internet has become essential for every company or organization. But first, it is necessary to define and implement appropriate methods and tools in order to obtain reliable and relevant information.
Meeting this need is the reason for the birth of Cybion in 1996, from a vision shared by Carlo Revelli and Joël de Rosnay: helping companies and organizations to discover and use the Internet efficiently as a tool for information research and monitoring. They aimed to develop an exclusive method based on the synergy between intelligent agents, search engines and human analysts.
Cybion: a targeted area of activity
Over recent years, a collective awareness has developed of the Internet as a means of exchanging information and products. For a company, this involves the possibility of monitoring its competitive universe, its field of activity, its market. A new level of awareness is even more recent: companies and organizations need to monitor, detect and analyze the information that is produced and exchanged between Internet users.
This is why Cybion only deals with online information. But Cybion's expertise covers all forms of online information: :
- Web sites of companies, organizations or institutions: these sites are what could be called 'official' information. They present the structures, areas of expertise and news of different economic or social players. For this reason, they have become a prime target for competitive watch activities, as they make it possible to detect the appearance of new entrants on a market, strategic ruptures, nominations, evolutions in products or services.
- Personal Web sites: the Internet has become an area where a huge mass of unofficial information and commentary lives, evolves and grows. They can appear next to or even before the 'official' site of a brand in the results of search engines or directories! Tracking the appearance of new sites very closely enables the identification of players and above all the analysis of their arguments, in order to prepare appropriate responses (rebuttals on the site, press interviews, opening a new factory…)
- Newsgroups and mailing lists: these virtual areas for dialogue and exchange between Internet users are becoming more and more important for companies and organizations. Opinions, reactions, information and revelations appear and are shared. However, some of them directly concern a company's products and activities. Rumors circulate, cyberconsumer habits are created, reinforced, blown up, and finish by 'making a noise'. That can have disastrous consequences for a company's image (critical press articles, calls to demonstrate…) and a negative impact on their activity (fall in their share price, boycott…)
- Web-zines (e-zines, or e-newsletters): these are publications that only exist on the Web. Usually, they are sent to people that have subscribed on a Web site. Their exclusive information are more and more often used and reproduced by 'traditional' media. Agent Lab:
The richness of the Internet lies in the diversity and the volume of information that is published there. However, manual exploitation of this information is problematic in most cases, as repetitive tasks take up a lot of time and require significant investment in financial terms. But the different families of intelligent agents make it possible to automate part of the current awareness activities (checking for updates in sources, automation of searches, composition of personalized press reviews, etc…)
Our team of researchers, specialized in information science, has monitored more than 7 years all the tools used to automate the current awareness process. This process contains 3 distinct phases that correspond to the following groups of tools:
- Collection tools (metamotors, crawlers, Cybion Eye™, etc.)
- Categorization tools to assist analysis (statistical analysis technology, semantic and/or syntactic analysis, analysis by cartographic representation, etc.)

Each year, you get a panorama of all the automatic language processing technologies as well as tools and their use within the strategic watch process.
No computing solution is adapted to the automation of all the different strategic watch cases. Some technologies are particularly effective at processing informal sources. Others are more efficient in the analysis of structured documents. Complete automation of the current awareness cycle generally requires the successive and complementary use of different technologies.
